- Analysis of algorithm components and parameters using surrogate modelling: some case studies
Nguyen Dang (KU Leuven KULAK) Co-authors: Patrick De Causmaecker Abstract: Modern well-performing optimisation algorithms are usually highly parametrised. Algorithm developers are often interested in the questions of how different algorithm components and parameters influence performance of algorithms. We focus on a group of recently proposed algorithm parameter analysis techniques that utilise surrogate modelling, namely forward selection, fANOVA and ablation analysis with surrogates. The question when applying these methods is what kind of information we want to gain for a deeper understanding of how the analysed algorithm works. It might not always be straightforward for an algorithm developer to interpret analysis results and decide what to use for improving his/her algorithm. In this work, we illustrate the applications of these methods on a number of case studies in optimisation algorithms and discuss the advantages of combining them for thorough insights into the algorithms under study.
