Historical noteLe Balcon de l’Émulation is located inside the building of the Société Libre d’Émulation, a society aimed at cultivating the arts, sciences and humanities that was founded in 1779 by the prince-bishop François-Charles de Velbruck. The original building was also built in 1779, but it was destroyed by an attack of the Imperial German Army during World War I, on August 20, 1914, which also gives name to the square Place du 20-Août. In 1939, the Société Libre d’Émulation requested the reconstruction of the building. The current building, of neoclassical style, was designed by the architect Julien Koenig. |
