- Towards a Lightning-Inspired Meta-heuristic
Mohand Mezmaz (University of Mons) Co-authors: M. Mezmaz, A. Vandaele, D. Tuyttens, S. Itani and N. Melab Abstract: This paper gives an overview of our new meta-heuristic inspired by the lightning phenomenon. Lightning is a massive electrostatic discharge between the electrically charged regions belonging to clouds or the surface of a planet. The lightning algorithm takes two parameters, namely Discharges to control the exploration or diversification capacity of the algorithm, and Size to control the exploitation or intensification capacity of the algorithm. Exploration is the ability of a meta-heuristic to explore different regions of the solution space. While exploitation is the ability of a meta-heuristic to intensify research in a specific region of the solution space. With these two parameters, it is possible to find a good balance between diversification and intensification.
