  Abstract:
  The nuclear phase-out law has been passed in 2003 in Belgium for closing down nuclear power plants (NPP's) after 40 operating years. In 2012 NPP's produce about 50% of the domestic electricity. Green parties argue without any quantitative elements that the phase-out is a contribution for stimulating renewable energy sources (RES), and promoting the rational use of energy (RUE). A system-dynamics model brings rational elements to the passionate debate, which is more pertinent than ever after the Fukushima disaster in March 2011. It appears that delaying the nuclear phase-out by 20 years would be favourable to both RES and RUE, as otherwise natural gas would rapidly get the lion share of electricity production in Belgium, creating new unwanted dependencies regarding the safety of supply, the dependency on gas suppliers, and the increased use of non-renewable and CO2-emitting fossil fuels.
