  Abstract:
  “Where’s my bike ? ” is the question asked by community websites like www. wheresmyvillo.be, demonstrating that the success of city bike sharing systems (BSSs) crucially depends on the availability — in each rental station and at all time — of both some bikes and some free parking spaces. BSS operators attempt to achieve this by employing a fleet of light repositioning vehicles to move bikes between stations. Although some approaches in the literature exist to support an automated planning of the repositioning activities, they all fall short of delivering a comprehensive solution for this challenging problem. We argue that the main reason for this is that all current approaches attempt to combine two distinct problems that are best handled separately.
