- The impact of preprocessing for solving the train routing problem

Vansteenwegen Abstract: When a train approaches a station, a route that traverses the switch zone and leads towards a platform is determined. Once this route is set for that particular train it becomes unchangeable and the only option to avoid accidents is to let that train wait until its whole route is cleared. For large and complex stations where many train lines merge and intersect, blocked routes are one of the main causes of delay. To reduce this delay, one should carefully consider the routing of trains through station areas when constructing a railway timetable. However, even for medium stations with a relatively simple infrastructure lay-out, the number of possible routes for each train can be very high.
