- City Logistics: Modelling & Efficiently Solving SHOP & HOP
Delphine Lucq (Ghent University) Co-authors: Sidharta Gautama, El-Houssaine Aghezzaf Abstract: SHOP & HOP is a concept where shoppers can leave their purchases at the dealers' to find them later in the parking areas where their cars are parked. This concept was implemented in the city of Ghent in 2016. After one year of operation the concept was put on hold because the hoped-for success was not reached. The aim of this paper is to understand the reasons of this failure by describing a pathway to a framework, enabling an efficient analysis of the operational choices of the original SHOP & HOP concept. This pathway consists of two main phases. In the first phase, the SHOP & HOP concept is modelled as a Pickup and Delivery Problem (PDP). In the second phase, a genetic algorithm is developed for its solution. Compared to exact solutions, the genetic algorithm is able to drastically reduce the needed computation time, while generating good quality, feasible solutions at an acceptable pace.
