- Partisanship in everyday life: predictive modeling with Facebook like data
Stiene Praet (University of Antwerp) Co-authors: Peter Van Aelst, David Martens Abstract: Although politics and everyday life never have been completely separated, today, the political debate seems to enter more than ever different aspects of our social lives. “Lifestyle politics” suggests that political and ideological opinions are strongly connected to our values, consumption choices and lifestyle. A potential valuable data source to capture these values and lifestyle is social media data. In this research we combine survey - and Facebook “like” data of more than 6700 respondents in Belgium to study partisan divide in non-political domains and answer two main research questions: (1) how pronounced is the political divide in different lifestyle categories and (2) which Facebook users are more likely to like politically divided content. We use predictive modeling to explore the predictive power of different lifestyle categories to predict political leaning. Secondly we use Shannon entropy to measure ideological homogeneity for each Facebook page and aggregate this across categories and individuals. The results indicate that the partisan divide is strong in politics and civil society but also present in our book and music preferences. Travel and sports on the other hand, bring voters with different ideologies together. Generally, older, less educated and more politically extreme Facebook users are more prone to like politically divided content. This research is the first to make an empirical contribution to the literature of “lifestyle politics” based on social media data.
