Complete the short FWO-questionnaire in order to raise the awareness about “Operations Research, Data Science, and Analytics”

Waarschijnlijk hebben jullie in het verleden ook al moeten zoeken naar het meest geschikte panel bij het FWO om een onderzoeksproject of beursaanvraag in te dienen. Bij het panel “G&M2: Economie, Bedrijfseconomie en Management” zitten meestal wel enkele mensen die iets van OR kennen, maar de discipline zelf wordt daar bijvoorbeeld niet vermeld. Zeker nu het IWT deels opgegaan is in het FWO en het FWO dus ook meer toepassingsgericht onderzoek moet beoordelen en financiering, lijkt het ons noodzakelijk dat onze discipline een volwaardige plaats krijgt binnen het FWO. Daarom willen we iedereen oproepen om via onderstaande link (recent door FWO gelanceerd) onze discipline aan te melden als “weesdiscipline”. 

Om onze kansen op succes te verhogen, bundelen we voor deze vraag onze krachten met de collega’s die werken rond data analytics. Vandaar dat we als naam voor de discipline voorstellen om “Operations Research, Data Science, and Analytics” te gebruiken.

Orphan discipline: "Operations Research, Data Science, and Analytics"

Motivation: Traditionally, the field of Operations Research (OR) has a strong academic presence in Flanders. More recently, the field of Data Science, and the combination of Data Science with Operations Research (which is usually called "Analytics") has grown in importance. The yearly Belgian Operations Research conference (ORBEL) draws approximately 150 participants, of which certainly more than half come from Flanders, and this number is expected to rise significantly as the Belgian OR Society (also called ORBEL) starts to collaborate more with the Data Science and Analytics community.  

Even though many projects in the area of Operations Research, Data Science, and Analytics are submitted to FWO every year, it is not clear to which panel(s) the area belongs. Operations Research projects are typically submitted to the panel “G&M2: Economie, Bedrijfseconomie en Management”, and some members in this panel are definitely aware of the importance of the field. The domain of Data Science is partially covered by the panel “W&T5: Informatica en Kennistechnologie”. The field of Analytics does not have a clear target panel, and projects in this area are probably submitted to either G&M2 or W&T5.  However, these disciplines are currently not mentioned in the descriptions of either of the panels. Moreover, Operations Research, Data Science, and Analytics are typically applied in many more domains than either management (G&M2) or computer science (W&T5). On the contrary, the area has important applications in health care, logistics, production planning, engineering, energy networks, agriculture, etc. 

Since FWO is now also responsible for more applied research, both in projects and scholarships, the domain of Operations Research, Data Science, and Analytics should be fully recognized by FWO as an independent discipline. Moreover, it should be clear to which panel applied and fundamental research concerning Operations Research, Data Science, and Analytics should be submitted.

We gaan vanuit ORBEL hierover ook een brief sturen aan het FWO, maar om onze vraag kracht bij te zetten, zouden we ook zoveel mogelijk meldingen via deze link willen hebben.
